Setting up a new profile/Email address using Netscape 4.61

It’s possible that 4.61 has a bug that prevents the correct setting for Outgoing Mail Server, (not SMTP), from entering correctly. Therefore a manually change may be required once the profile is configured.

The following steps outline the way to successfully configure profiles...

  1. Double clink on the Netscape shortcut on your desktop.
  2. Select the "Manage Profiles" button on the bottom left.
  3. In this window select "New" on the upper right side. This window gives you a brief description of what an individual profile can provide. Hit "next" after reading.
  4. Under "FULL NAME", type the name or alias you want listed in the preferences of this profile. (Examples: SPAZ, Billy Bubba Barker, etc.). This is what people will see when you send email. Under "Email Address", insert your E-mail address. (Example: SPAZ@327th.com). Then select "Next".
  5. Under "Profile Name", select what you want your profile to read as in your profile group. (Example: SPAZ, Bubba, Family, etc.). Where your information is stored on your hard drive will be automatically set. No need to mess with this selection. Select "Next" again.
  6. Under "Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server", enter your own ISP's E-mail server. (Example: mail.mindspring.com). ISP Email servers have a specific listing so you might need to contact them to find out what it is. Remember, each profile can be set to read and send to different e-mail accounts. If you wanted to use an Earthlink account, you would type, mail.earthlink.net Select "Next"
  7. Under "Mail Server User Name", type the name your E-mail server uses to recognize you. (Example: SPAZ@327th.com). This where 4.61 may have a bug. We will manually fix this later. Under "Incoming Mail Server", enter the E-mail server from which you wish to receive mail. (Example: mail.327th.com). Then select "Next".
  8. Here you can input a specific News Group if you wish. Leave it as/is with "News". News groups can always be added later if needed.
  9. ****Select "Finish" and your profile will open automatically****

  10. Now to check the settings under your new profile. At the top left select "Edit" and then "Preferences" at the bottom of the drop down. Then click on the + next to Mail & Newsgroups. This will drop down additional selections.
  11. Select "Identity" this should read the way you want others to know you. (Examples: "Name" SPAZ, "Email address" SPAZ@327th.com). The other sections here have nothing to do with configuring this profile for e-mail use, ignore them for now. Do NOT hit Ok or Cancel yet.
  12. Go back to the drop down under Mail & Newsgroup servers and this time select "Mail Servers". In here the "Incoming Mail Servers" should read, mail.327th.com, if not, ADD it. Under "Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server" you should also have, mail.earthlink.net (or whatever your ISP Email Server is), if not type it in. Under "Outgoing Mail Server User Name" it should read your e-mail address for the server, (i.e. spaz@327th.com). I think this might be case sensitive issue with Netscape so use lower case. If it configured this incorrectly, type it in.
  13. Select "Ok" and you are done
